WWDC ‘08 Keynote Recap

iPhones

Sure, the big news is the 3G iPhone, its new lower price, and third-party apps. However, I’m finding myself oddly excited about MobileMe, Apple’s replacement for .Mac.

Keeping information synchronized across multiple machines and devices has always been a challenge. Apple’s iSync, introduced way back in Mac OS X 10.2, tried to tackle this problem. Eventually, iSync was wrapped into the core of the operating system and integrated with .Mac. MobileMe is the next step in that evolution, and it looks like Apple has finally gotten it right.

But don’t think for a minute that I won’t be in line for a 3G iPhone when they go on sale.

[Update] Okay, I have one little issue with the new 3G iPhone: In-store activation. It looks like Apple and AT&T are going to require that you go to a brick-and-mortar store in order to purchase the device. Activation will take place right there, a process that should take “10 to 12 minutes.” I’m hoping they find a way to offer pre-activated phones online.
