The folks over at Google have written a post about the work that is taking place on the Mac (and Linux) version of Chrome. The post assures us that progress is being made, but shies away from giving a firm date — or even a general time-frame for that matter — as to when the Mac (and Linux) version of Chrome will be available.
Mac users are accustomed to being an afterthought in the realm of software, but I expect more from Google. Apple has worked hard to make it easier for software developers and publishers to write or port apps to Mac OS X. Given the somewhat-special relationship between Apple and Google, one would think that releasing a Mac version of Chrome in tandem with the Windows version would be a priority. And, as I’ve mentioned before, given that Chrome is based on WebKit, as is Apple’s Safari, there seems to be little excuse for why Mac users can’t download the Google browser today. I guess that Google thinks it has more time on the Mac side since Microsoft no longer makes a Mac version of Internet Explorer.
