The Good & The Bad

History has been made. A generation after the civil rights movement, the United States of America has elected its first African-American president. The politics of fear and division were defeated by the promise of hope, change, and the never-ending American spirit. As President-elect Obama stated in his victory speech last night, we have shown the world that the flame of our democracy is not dead.

But with this great accomplishment, comes the real possibility that Proposition 8 will pass here in California. The gay community has made great strides in its own civil rights struggle, but there is still too much fear, hatred, and bigotry in what is supposed to be a progressive state. I still have my fingers crossed that Prop. 8 will be rejected. If it is not, the issue will probably be hashed out in the courts for years to come.

In my lifetime, I have seen amazing firsts. Now that we have started on this journey, I pray that we will be able to succeed.
